2. Jatinga: International Jatinga Festival 2010
Jatinga , a village on a ridge, is locatedat the foothills of the Borail range, is nine km away from Haflong, the only hill station in the State and the headquarters of the Dima Hasao district (erstwhile North Cachar Hills district), Assam State in India. It is most famous for the phenomenon of birds “committing suicide”. This small place of beauty is mainly inhabited by about 2,500 Jaintia tribal people.

Bird mystery of Jatinga

At the end of monsoon months, mysterious behavior of birds takes place. During moonless and foggy dark nights between 6 p.m. and 9:30 p.m., flying birds come crashing to the ground with no prior warning whatsoever. The local tribals took this natural phenomenon to be spirits flying from the sky to terrorize them. This phenomenon is not confined to a single species, with Tiger Bittern, Black Bittern, Little Egret, Pond Heron, Indian Pitta and Kingfishers all being affected.

1. World champion Viswanathan Anand played out a hard-fought draw with Magnus Carlsen of Norway to finish second in the Bilbao Final Masters chess tournamen. Now Magnus Carlesen is at 2nd spot and Viswanathan Anand at 1st place

2. Super Typhoon Megi smashed into the northern Philippines. A typhoon is a tropical cyclone that develops in the northwestern part of the Pacific Ocean between 180° and 100°E.

A tropical cyclone is a storm system characterized by a large low-pressure center and numerous thunderstorms that produce strong winds and heavy rain. Tropical cyclones strengthen when water evaporated from the ocean is released as the saturated air rises, resulting in condensation of water vapor contained in the moist air.

4. “Harry Potter” author J.K. Rowling has won the Hans Christian Andersen Literature Prize. She is the first recipient of the 5,00,000 kroner ($93,352) award, which was handed out on October 19 at a ceremony in Odense, Andersen's hometown.
The prize is given to a person who can be compared with Andersen, the Danish writer who was born in 1805 and wrote some 160 fairy tales and poems before his death in 1875.

1. Oscar-winning composer A.R. Rahman and the Ramakrishna Mission Ashram, located in Chhattisgarh's Narainpur, have jointly won the Indira Gandhi Award for National Integration for the year 2009 for their services in promoting and preserving national integration.
2. Nissan Motor India (NMIPL) announced on Tuesday the start of exports of its ‘Made-in-India' global compact hatchback, Nissan Micra. Nissan Micra is expected to be exported to over 100 countries in Europe, the Middle East and Africa. The company aims to export over 1.10 lakh units in 2010-11. Its headquarter is in Japan, the branch in India is in Chennai.

1. The controversial anti-cervical cancer vaccines Gardasil and Cervarix, trials of which were suspended by the Indian government earlier this year, are given in Madhya Pradesh through vaccination drives in girls' schools. While the trials in Andhra Pradesh and Gujarat were conducted on illiterate, poor and tribal women, the vaccines have found a new target group in Madhya Pradesh in the form of girls studying at elite boarding schools.
